Beginner's Tips For Texas Holdem

There are lots of in depth strategy articles on how to better your game of Texas Holdem, but if you’re very new to the game, theories on reverse implied odds from late position are going to mean very little to you. In order to help you build a solid foundation for playing better poker without overwhelming you, here are the five most basic tips for playing Holdem well.

Have a Game Plan Every Hand:

Even before you see the flop, you should have an idea of what you think the hand you were dealt is capable of. Try to decide under what conditions, if any, the hand you have would excel, then evaluate if you’re in one of those situations. Although every play must be weighed at the time you are to make it, knowing ahead of time what conditions you want to see can help you make good decisions and be prepared for anything.

If you wish to play poker profitably, you need to make a series of well thought out plays, and not make quick decisions under pressure.

The community cards that are revealed as a hand goes on really changes what hands are good. You might have the best hand on the flop, and a losing hand on the turn. Make sure that you are willing to let hands go should the community cards not go in your favor. Pocket aces should be played aggressively pre-flop, but if there are four cards of the same suit showing and the aces you hold are not of that suit, it’s definitely not worth continuing. You must identify when your hand needs to be let go and be willing to let them when it’s time.

Play Aggressively:

There are two ways to win any hand in poker, either winning a showdown after the river, or forcing all opponents to fold. If you only call or fold yourself, but never bet or raise, then you are limiting your options severely, so you must learn to get comfortable with betting if you’re going to win long term.

You shouldn’t bet every chance you get, a majority of hands are losing hands after all, but if you have a good hand, you need to make enough profit with it to cover your loses from other hands. It’s not enough to win with good hands, you have to win with good hands and maximize your profit with great hands while minimizing your loses with the poor hands.

Don’t go on tilt:

It’s inevitable that sometimes, people who had no reason to play a lousy hand will get lucky and beat you when you had them dominated early on. The important thing is to know that you played your hand correctly and that in the long run, the “fishy” players who play too loose and can’t let go of a hand, you will win much more often in that situation than you lose. If you let a bad beat upset you, you will seek revenge, and want to get your money back, and often this will make you play much more loosely and you will lose even more chips.

And the most important piece of advice is to keep practicing. The more hands you play, the more of a handle you’ll get on when to take what action. There’s a lot to be said to reading strategy for winning poker, but until you apply it to the table, you won’t truly improve.
