As Poker players, How should we think about value?

As online poker players, we’re notorious for constantly talking about expected value, value in general and how to maximise value. We never seem to stop talking about value in fact. Funny that we also use the term ‘value’ when attempting to justify rash purchases, prop bets, sports bets, obscenely expensive nights out and the like. There’s definitely frugal poker players out there (often the older and wiser heads) , though they’d often be labelled as ‘nits’.

It’s funny how most of the hardcore online poker players feel like they constantly maximise their value online, by playing in a certain style/method, perhaps one which gives them access to better poker rewards afforded by the site which they play on, but do they really

I spoke to a very knowledgeable and successful 6-max SnG player recently who couldn’t emphasize enough the importance of hourly rate when it comes to poker. The importance of a players ‘hourly’ may seem obvious to many, but most just think of their hourly as an hourly rate, which will rise as they move up stakes and run good, and don’t take it much past then. The player in question who I spoke to voiced his opinion of thinking about hourly rate in every single decision being made at the table, for example: ‘I could call a 3-bet here with a marginal yet speculative and deceptive hand, but overall I think this play will add too much variance to my game, and although I’ve got an edge against this opponent, I think I can find other edges to exploit which will increase my overall hourly more’. It’s this type of active thinking which I don’t think players take in to account enough. We often hear players being described as ‘robotic’, and it’s this lack of active thinking which I think epitomises this style of play. If someone is grinding 5-6+ hours a day, they should really be thinking about these things far more often, and really take the true meaning of ‘value’ to heart beyond Poker Rewards, rakeback, style of play, strategy and all of these other things which we stereotypically associated with increasing our value as players.

The gentleman I talked to even went as far as talking about investments such as PC screens, poker software etc. and weighed up the pros and cons to evaluate whether they would or could increase his hourly rate in the future. Poker players inevitably fall in to lazy and bad habits, and they should try to do what they’re afraid to do to solve this.
