The Pot Ripper Incident at Absolute Poker

Insider Intrusion

Poker online sites are prone to players who try to cheat. Sometimes you will find that someone within the site; it could be an employee or an ex-employee or maybe even a consultant, who has access to the security system, will try to cheat. They will have the log-in Id of the players, so they will be able to enter the game and see the players’ hands.

How Crazy Marco Exposed the Culprit

Absolute Poker was also faced with such a problem. Here a “super user” account was leaked out to another player. This player used the account to see all the hands of his opponents. He used this account when he played a huge $ 1,000 tournament. His success made him use the account again and in the end it aroused the suspicion of “Crazy Marco,” who then got hold of the full tournament hand history and could expose the cheat as a co owner of the site. However, Absolute Poker took it very badly. They did not respond in the manner that satisfied the other players. They were very keen on seeing that no blame was laid on their door step. What Absolute Poker should have realized is that all poker sites are prone to such kinds of cheating, and they should take firm steps to see that it did not happen again.

Absolute Poker’s Poor Defense

They started an investigation into the incident and then published a statement to the effect that they were confident that their security was 100% fool proof. And that they had frozen the accounts of those against whom allegations were leveled. They also stated that the investigations were continuing.

They went on to state that their clients were given data regarding at most, on their hands, and so they could not see any other hand. Copies of others’ hands were given only when there was a showdown. They went on to explain that it was only poor play by the players that resulted in the showdown. They went on to state that there was no foul play.

Nonchalance of the Players and Final Admission by Absolute Poker

The statement was taken by the other players to be one that Absolute Poker was making because they wanted to protect themselves are not what that was correct. It took Absolute Poker more than a month to admit that there had been a security breach.

Poker stars and Party Poker Behaved with Responsibility and Respect

Other Poker sites like Poker Stars and Party Poker were also involved in scandals. However, as soon as they realized that they were being cheated, they started an investigation. They banned the player and also made him refund the cash. The action of the Poker Stars and Party Poker were seen as respectable and responsible. The sites did not lose any other players.

Absolute Poker’s Loss of Integrity

However, the long period and inaction, and their reluctance to admit that they were breached made Absolute Poker to lose many players. Their integrity was challenged.

Scandals are now on the rise. With more and more people joining in, the number of players whose sole intention is to cheat could only go up. It would be very difficult for the organizers to keep track of all the players and what they do. So you can be sure that what happened in Absolute Poker could happen repeatedly. However, if the sites should retain their integrity, they should take strong action forthwith, and make it known to all users of the site. This will help the other players to know that the site is being watched, and this will also keep the cheats off.
